INGREDIENTS:
For Dal:
1/3 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)
2/3 cup water
2-3 pinch turmeric powder
Salt to taste
1 tsp oil
For 1st Tadka:
1 tbsp oil
2 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
5-6 curry leaves
1/8 tsp asafoetida
1 finely chopped small onion
2 cloves of garlic either grated or pasted
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1 finely chopped green chilli
1 finely chopped small tomato
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp red chilli powder
Little salt
1/2-3/4 cup water
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves
For 2nd Tadka (Garnish):
1 tbsp oil
1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
1/8 tsp cumin seeds
1-2 pinch asafoetida
1 clove grated garlic
1/8 tsp grated ginger
1 dried red chilli
1 green chilli slit half & cut from middle
1/4 tsp red chilli powder
SERVES: 2 people
PREPARATION TIME: 15 Min
COOKING TIME: 22 Min
TOTAL TIME: 37 Min
* 1 CUP = 237 ML
METHOD:
Cooking Dal:
1. Wash and clean the split pigeon peas (toor dal) and soak in water for 1 hour.
2. Strain the water.
3. Pressure cook for 1 whistle with water, turmeric powder, Salt to taste, and oil.
4. Allow cooker to cool down by itself.
Making 1st Tadka:
1. Heat oil and ghee in a kadai.
2. Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, finely chopped onion, garlic paste, ginger paste, chopped green chilli and mix well.
3. Saute for 2-3 min till onions turn golden.
4. Add chopped tomato, coriander powder, red chilli powder, Little salt. Mix well and cook for 1-2 min till oil separates.
5. Add 1/4 cup water and allow it boil.
6. Add boiled pigeon pea lentil and mix well.
7. Add required quantity of water to make medium thick dal. You may add 1/4-1/2 cup water.
8. Add finely chopped coriander leaves.
9. Cover with lid and cook on low flame for 3-4 min.
10. After 3-4 min dal fry is ready!
Making 2nd Tadka (Garnish):
1. In a small pan heat oil and ghee.
2. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, grated garlic, grated ginger, dried red chilli & mix well.
3. Add green chilli.
4. Switch off flame & add red chilli powder.
5. Take out hot dal in serving bowl & pour tadka over it.
6. Dal fry tadka is ready! Serve with your favourite rice or paratha!
TIPS:
1. For making dal fry tadka it is important to cook dal for only 1 whistle and not let the lentils dissolve. Each lentil should be separate.
